The new SweetSilver collection is being launched on the first of September 2016.
This collection, entitled The Kingdom of God, is a small but provocative range of jewellery that crawls over the line between fine art and craft. The controversial title is a reference to the teachings of Jesus in which he compares the kingdom of God to a great treasure buried in a field, which a man sells everything to purchase.
In these jewellery pieces, we see humanity from a God-like perspective: humans become mere insects.
But these are precious, golden insects that are valuable because they belong to the Kingdom of God. The assumption is that God - often featured in the jewellery as a gold-wire beetle that connects the other, smaller insects - has given these little bugs their value, and without His intervention they would have continued as base creatures crawling about in the dirt. These are little bugs who have seen the vast treasure of the kingdom of heaven, and have given up everything to become part of it, and as a result of that, have become treasure themselves, infinitelyprecious to their loving Father.
The fact that God is represented by a bug Himself may seem to be an attempt at shock tactics tantamount to blasphemy, whereas, according to the Bible, God humbled Himself to become a ‘bug’ and died in order to bring ‘bugs’ into His kingdom (see Philippians chapter 2 verses 2 to 5).
And so, the Kingdom of God collection is more than a few items of jewellery, it is wearable fine art, through which a Christian artist attempts to step out of the box of ‘Christian art’ and join the conversation taking place in the wider world of Art. Only time will tell if anyone will listen, but this will not be the last time that SweetSilver jewellery ventures outside these confines; expect a lot more unashamed and controversial work from this brand in the future.
Silver is precious and lovely.
But there’s a lot more silver in this world than you might suspect…
The ‘silver’ things in the world are freely available. Look out the window: every star and planet is a tiny, beautiful, enormous silver gift. Look at yourself: you are made of trillions of cells each doing fascinating things.
These free and wonderful ‘silver’ things are precious gifts for everyone.
SweetSilver creations are little reminders of the world, because sometimes we exist without really living. We constantly need to be reminded of the real silver around us.
Joyful surprise at the lovely, and consciousness of the cruel, both feature in SweetSilver creations – without either, we are ignorant. Even in the darkest moments, there is always something to be amazed at.
SweetSilver is a reaction to wonderful things. Even darkness can be something wonderful.
"Light is sweet, and it pleases the eye to see the sun.
However many years a man may live, let him enjoy them all."
– Ecclesiastes 11:7-8
People and the earth are important. That's why SweetSilver is Fairtrade Foundation registered, and packaging is recycled and reusable.
